Students in second grade have been working on peer editing their writing. First, they conferred with a partner and gave feedback. Then they shared their final pieces using a Kagan structure called Inside-Outside Circle. This activity resulted in high engagement and was part of a Student-Centered Coaching cycle.

In Music and Drama, the 1st grade students learned the story of Peter and the Wolf. They used their Music Smart skills to identify the instruments that were used to represent each character. Then they performed an informance of the story complete with costumes and props. Now that they are experts on the story, they are creating maps of the setting during Art Integration. Their maps will include key locations and the pathway that each character takes throughout the story. 🎭👦🏼🐺🦆🐈🐧🎶

Did you know Nature Smart includes sorting and classifying? In physical education, kindergarten and first graders had a color relay. They used People Smart skills to work as a team and develop a strategy. Then they raced relay style to collect the color pieces. After collecting and sorting, a color was drawn, and the team who had the most of that color was the winner. 🟥🟧🟨🟩🟦🟪🟥🟧🟨🟩🟦 #multipleintelligences #EFA+

The SFSD Experience
During Innovation Lab, 3rd graders learned a traditional Native American game called Sticks. They enjoyed it so much that they played it again during their classroom community time. Teaching Native games honors culture, and teaches focus, perseverance, being a good sport and more! Sticks: The game of Sticks is played with 10 thin sticks about 6” long that are held in a player’s fist with the bottoms of the sticks hidden in the lower fist. One stick is marked on the bottom. The idea of the game is to draw as many sticks as possible before getting the marked one. The winner of the game is the person who can draw the most sticks before getting the marked stick. This game is for developing pure intuition, until the person can identify the marked stick, then the game becomes the skill of observation. (Assiniboine)

The 1st graders were busy using their MI (multiple intelligences) “Smarts” during math. They used their People Smart skills to work in groups. They used their Nature Smart skills to sort animals into categories of those that walk, fly, or swim. They used their Math Smart skills to graph their sorted data. 🦓🐆🦅🦋🐬🐠 #multipleintelligences #EFA+

Superintendent Jane Stavem hosted nearly 50 future educators Tuesday for "Bagels with the Boss." Student teachers currently working in SFSD classrooms joined us to learning about job opportunities, hear about the support offered by the District's Instructional Coaches, and connect with leadership. We look forward to adding many of these new teachers to our team in the Fall!
